In Resonance
I think Pilates instructors are taught that the client's goal is to master the system–to master the Teaser, the Hundreds, whatever it may be. However, not every person has that goal.
What if the goal was simply for the movement to resonate with the body?
To be a friend. Something the body recognizes. A familiarity we can return to. That rebounding wave that laps up through the body.
Resonance is a physical phenomenon where a system vibrates with a larger amplitude when an external force matches its specific natural frequency, allowing for a strong transfer of energy. It appears in sound, chemistry, electronics, and many other areas.
Mastery asks: Can I perform the movement as it is meant to be performed?
Resonance asks: Can I find a way to recognize myself within the movement?
What if the vibration of the body is not trying to overtake the frequency of the movement, the apparatus, or the bodies around us? We try to match the frequency and vibration of the movement without losing our own.
Some days, that resonance may feel clear. Other days, it may not feel realistic or accessible. The body will not arrive into the space the same way every day.
My goal as an instructor is to help people recognize resonance within themselves and build the confidence to find their own relationship to the practice. Not simply to master the movement, but to recognize themselves within it.
