Mobility vs. Flexibility

Flexibility and mobility are often used interchangeably, but they are not the same. Flexibility describes how much a muscle or muscle group can lengthen, while mobility is your ability to move a joint through its available range actively. For example, you may be able to pull your leg toward you with a strap, but lifting it to the same height without assistance requires strength, coordination, and control. Flexibility gives you access to a range of motion; mobility helps you own it.

This is why stretching is not always the complete answer to feeling tight or restricted. Your body may already have enough flexibility but need more strength and control within that range. Pilates, yoga, and mobility drills can support mobility by combining movement with resistance, alignment, and coordination. As a practical takeaway, follow passive stretches with an active movement through the same range. After stretching your hamstrings with a strap, for example, practice lifting and lowering the leg without assistance. Ultimately, it’s less about how far you can move and more about how strong and supported you feel while doing it.
